Indian Biogas Association welcomes unlocking of India’s biogas potential in Indore

Indore leads to show the pathway to other Indian States

Indian Biogas Association today welcomed Government initiative of launching 550 TPD (tonne per day) MSW based Bio-CNG plant at Indore. This initiative will pave the way for other cities to follow similar initiatives.

After being ranked India’s cleanest city for the fifth year in a row by Swachh Survekshan 2021,Indore is coming up with Asia’s biggest plant to produce Bio-CNG from domestic waste generated every day; it will be inaugurated by Hon. PM Shri Narendra Modi on February 19, 2022.

Dr. A R Shukla, President, Indian Biogas Association said, “The Indian Biogas Association is advocating for such a scientific solution to biodegradable part of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) through bio-methanation, which not only provides energy in the form of Bio-CNG but also gives organic fertilizer. Indore serves as a stark example for other Indian cities struggling with garbage management issues. The city’s integrated waste management plan, which includes door-to-door waste pickup, source separation, and decentralised waste management, has proven to be successful, with over 95 percent of waste being processed successfully.”

“A solution like this has a lot of benefits, including better health and hygiene, a circular economy, employment development, and so on. Biogas is also being considered by the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan,” he further added.

Other cities like Hyderabad, Ahmadabad, Bangalore, Mumbai and Delhi that already have the necessary infrastructure and systems in place can use bio-methanation plants to implement the decentralised waste management model. Civic bodies can use the PPP model used by Indore to set  up biogas plants in the waste processing station. The involvement of different groups, such as citizens, NGOs, corporate houses, etc., can help the local governments to save costs, generate additional revenue, improve sanitation, and reduce pollution.
